Kamehameha Publishing's ESPeedometer - Aligning with the Education Strategic Plan

Kamehameha Publishing - Amplifying Hawaiian Perspectives

Educational Reach

Kamehameha Publishing extends Kamehameha School’s reach to Native Hawaiian communities across the world. Publishing is a critical way to sustain the growth of Native Hawaiian communities by preserving the voices, ways, and lessons of the past; by providing modern skills and representation of authentic Hawaiian voices and identity today; and by perpetuating culture, language, and educational successes for future generations by sharing ever-changing knowledge that marks our future.

We've Been Busy

Kamehameha Publishing both receives submissions and initiates projects from its internal staff of seven. All submissions and projects are reviewed by an external editorial board that represents a cross section of the broader Hawai'i community, from educators to cultural specialists to business people. Over the past three years Kamehameha Publishing has published 43 new books and multimedia titles and managed 11 reprints. With a growing list of more than 50 projects in progress, the number of educational materials for keiki, kumu, and ‘ohana is on the rise.

Amplifying Hawaiian Perspectives

Partnerships are key to building capacity and sustaining growth in the Hawai'i community. Through various projects, Kamehameha Publishing is working with about 50 authors and 20 artists from Hawai'i and abroad.

Through the Māpuna Grant program, Kamehameha Publishing has contributed funds to more than 17 projects that help amplify Hawaiian perspectives and build long-term intergenerational change in Native Hawaiian communities.

Our strategic partnerships with other publishers and community organizations are enhancing school and home learning environments by increasing the amount of quality Hawaiian publications. Through collaboration we build capacity, promote Hawaiian learning, increase reach, and open the window for future projects that benefit all of Hawai‘i.

Kamehameha Schools' Strategic Priorities 1 and 2: Community Outreach
Kamehameha Schools’ community outreach strategy is based on building educational momentum in a Native Hawaiian child’s first eight years and then supporting that child at critical points during the education journey. This strategy, to support an entire cohort of age-similar Native Hawaiian children through the education continuum, is essential to fostering attitudes and behaviors that will lead to positive, long-term, intergenerational change for Native Hawaiian families and communities.

Kamehameha Publishing Extends Education Beyond Classroom Walls
Kamehameha Publishing supports Kamehameha Schools’ mission by publishing and distributing Hawaiian language, culture, and community-based materials that engage, reinforce and invigorate Hawaiian cultural vitality. All of the materials that are published and distributed by Kamehameha Publishing tie into strategic priorites 1 and 2 of the Kamehameha Schools’ Education Strategic Plan.
